Creative Skills

Chart is a formalised educational and development project, that provides – through a programme of lectures and events – an insight into collecting contemporary art. Creative Skills initiated the project in partnership with University College Falmouth and with sponsorship from Tate St Ives and Newlyn Art Gallery. We were commissioned to produce the visual identity for this new initiative and a key piece of marketing material that needed to signal the existence of Chart, act as an invitation as well as listing the programme of the events.

Our response was to position the identity and associated marketing material independently of any of the artwork that would be discussed through the programme. Rather than draw on a singular photograph – of a piece of artwork – as the graphic element for the material, we decided to promote the ‘voice’ of Chart as an authoritative mentor and the programme as an exclusive club – to be invited into.

The main graphic element comes from direct reference to a bar graph, that charts the development of growth, specifically the 3 stage growth of the programme – before Chart, during and after. To achieve the right tone of voice, we mixed this with a refined typographic treatment and a colour palette of white, grey and black.
