Sophie Tarbuck

Published on the occasion of Sophie Tarbuck’s solo exhibition at The Architecture Centre, Bristol, PLACE / A study of Modern houses in Cornwall provides a contextual reference and insight into the production of the collection of artworks. Being commissioned early on in the project enabled us to develop a strong sense of the project that we could then reflect in the final publication. Read More...

Sophie’s approach to the year-and-a-half long project was to create a collection of artworks informed by a very thorough research and analysis process of the histories of the houses; the theories behind the architecture; and personal interpretations of the buildings from architects and house owners, gathered from interviews.

It was apparent to us that the publication should become a record, not just of the exhibition, but of the complete process of the project. A record of all the parts, that would not otherwise be shown in the gallery environment, and brought together to better contextualise the artworks.

All elements of the project needed to be equally represented – and our approach was to systematically present three distinct sections reflecting each part of the project: houses, interviews and artworks. Section breakers are patterns taken from the ‘Letratone’ sheets Sophie uses in her collages. And copy was typeset – justified into a strict grid – to reference the modernist origins of the architecture.

80 pages, paperback, 203 x 160 mm. Limited edition of 250. Photography Rob Smith and Paul Mounsey. Published by The Architecture Centre, Bristol.
