As part of an exhibition design for Cornwall Museum & Art Gallery (formerly Royal Cornwall Museum) Two designed and created a custom typeface inspired by the road signs found throughout Truro.

Context
On a site visit to the Museum and the city, we were drawn to the street signs that we observed throughout Truro. The names of these streets refer to past associations: Castle Street, River Street, Duke Street, Edward Street, Kenwyn Street, St Dominic Street. And for us the design of these signs, their production, materiality and the hand lettering was a point of inspiration.

Typeface Design
Following on from extensive research throughout the city, the found letterforms were mapped and rationalised to create a full set. Where letters were missing these were created through a process of “close relations”. Drawing on these related qualities enabled us to develop a full set of glyphs for Truro including a limited range of punctuation marks.

Ultimately, there was a level of translation in the process. Whilst having the desire to best match the original, with the quirks and features of the letterforms—and to capture the inherent character of the vernacular—there was also a rationale interpretation that needed to take place in the translation.
By creating a custom typeface drawn from the historical fabric of the city, the design becomes something inherently a part of Truro, reflecting aspects of its history, its contemporary culture and its future.
