Collaborative publication design exploring themes of place and identity through photography and editorial design.
Publication Design
Background
Published as part of a Collaborative Practice project at Falmouth University, Now Here is a collaboration between Senior Lecturer Steve House and Associate Lecturer Nick Raven (Creative Director, Two) along with second year BA(Hons) Graphic Design students.
Contributors act as photographer, designer, editor and curator to explore collaborative approaches to image-making and storytelling and to investigate the relationship between place and identity through photography, typography, editorial design and self-publishing. As part of the project contributors are tasked with producing a creative response to these themes and to consider, through format, binding and materials, how best to capture their response into a meaningful and authentic publication design.
Collaborative Design
Each contributor is given a set of photographs from one of their peers and tasked with bringing them to life through a design layout across four pages of the publication. The project encourages collaborative practices through the collective production of a printed publication that is physically tactile and tangible.
This approach facilitates active engagement and enhances a spirit of collective endeavour unifying the group of contributors through active practice. And what emerges is as much about a collaborative exercise of a shared experience as it is about knowledge exchange and developing graphic design practice through a conversational discourse.
