Background
Produced on the occasion of the exhibition Nicola Bealing Death & Circuses, presented at Kestle Barton, on the Lizard, in Cornwall, the catalogue documents and illustrates Bealing’s fascination with and responses to the collections and archives held at Helston Museum.
Nicola Bealing is a Cornwall-based British artist who works in both painting and printmaking. Bealing’s work is unique for the highly imaginative nature of its subject matter and her interplay of psychological narratives.
Helston Museum
The Museum of Cornish Life is a museum housed in Helston’s former Market House and Drill Hall, located in Cornwall. The museum was founded in 1949 and holds archives of a surreal mix of objects, photographs and documents—all the human life, death and industry of a small town.
Mark Dion
“Nicola Bealing is a painter of exceptional skill, talent and vision... The freshness of her approach, applying her rigorous skill and insight, represents exactly the surprising type of collaboration that will keep the model of artists’ collaborations with museums from becoming conventional... The Helston Museum is a treasure. It is one of the most exciting and furtive collections open to the public that I have ever had the pleasure to visit.”
