Background
Rebel Voices is an exhibition that tells the story of the Cornish Prayer Book Rebellion in 1549. The exhibition explores the historical context, the reasons why it happened as well as other key historical social movements that have influenced Cornish society, identity and culture.
Design Creative
The ambition was to characterise the narrative of the exhibition display, in terms of the themes—Cornwall, culture, identity, protest and rebellion—and reinforce the story telling ambition to enhance the experience of the objects on display with interpretive content.
Drawn from the unique qualities of Cornwall—the fabric of the society and culture—we created a typographic ‘voice’ for the exhibition that is representative of Cornwall’s unique identity and one that is characteristic of protest and rebellion.
Using Aberfal, a typeface we designed from vernacular sources in Falmouth, in Cornwall, that are part of the historical fabric of the place, the design responds thematically to the narratives of the exhibition in terms of Cornwall, culture and identity. The qualities inherent in the typeface—a bold uppercase—demands attention and characterises themes of protest and rebellion.
