Background
The Penzance Convention was a three-day conference in expanded form. Building on The Falmouth Convention in 2010, it was conceived as an international meeting of artists, curators, writers, scientists, historians, philosophers and experts from other fields.
We were invited by Teresa Gleadowe and Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange to develop the event identity, communication materials and website.
Teresa Gleadowe, Project Director:
“Two contributed substantially to the conceptualisation and realisation of the Convention by asking intelligent and well focussed questions.”
Design Approach
In positioning the Convention we anchored our concept on ‘providing the space to exchange ideas and give direction for the dialogue around notions of contemporary art and exhibition-making’. Our approach was to create a ‘structured openness’ — something very ‘light touch’ which would balance the directorship of the Convention with the engagement of the audience (as something that would facilitate inspired thinking and lead to progressive collaborations). In making this balance the Convention engages equally with both individual practitioners and the leaders of larger cultural organisations, nationally and internationally.
Visual Identity Design
Like a proposition, a quotation, or a focus of intention, the logo graphically marks the space with which The Penzance Convention facilitates discussion and debate. Stamped onto the various applications, literally in the case of the conference pack, the logo signals the authority of the Convention without dominating.
