Background
Published on the occasion of Sophie Tarbuck’s solo exhibition at the Architecture Centre Bristol, PLACE / A study of Modern houses in Cornwall provides a contextual reference and insight into the production of the collection of artworks.
The approach to the year-and-a-half long project was informed by research-led practice and, through semi-structured interviews, Tarbuck conducted a discursive narrative enquiry with the architects, designers and owners of the houses. This ethnographic qualitative approach produced a rich set of information, of the houses and their histories, drawn from conversations, personal stories and insights.
Design Creative
Being commissioned early on in the project enabled us to develop a strong sense of the ambition, aim and objectives that we could then reflect in the final publication design.
We were able to create a book that became an interrelational record that reflected Tarbuck’s ambition for the project, intersecting forms and practices of architecture with personal motivations and reflections. This intersectional approach both contextualises the production of artworks while it also adds to the dimensional quality of process, of co-opting the narrative threads, that demonstrate Tarbuck’s approach to practice.
The catalogue features contributions by Jeremy Gould, Professor of Architecture at the University of Plymouth and a specialist in this field; Albert Hill, founding partner of The Modern House Estate Agents and contributor to publications such as Wallpaper*, The World of Interiors, The Guardian and The Times; and contemporary Glasgow based artist Toby Paterson whose work is influenced by 20th century architecture and by British Modernists such as Victor Pasmore and Ben Nicholson.
